Writable DVD’s come in a number of different Flavours, and the most common types are DVD + and -, so what exactly is the difference ? Well both are very similar, DVD – was developed by pioneer, and is supported by the DVD Forum, however there is no Industry (ISO) standard for writable DVD’s. DVD- is older than +.
Both DVD Standards have R and RW formats, the R means writable, or write once and RW means rewritable, it’s exactly the same as CD-RW and CD-R. If you want to be able to delete the Data, and reuse the Disc, and then choose an RW Disc.
DVD + is a newer Technology, and so the Media is often more expensive, however there is more money backing this Format, and so innovation is often much faster.
It’s common to find a DVD Recorder that is capable of recording at 16x speed for DVD+ , and only 8x speed for DVD-. DVD+ was designed to be compatible with more DVD players, however it seems about as compatible as DVD-, in fast there is very little difference between the two Standards.
DVD+
- 4.7 GB Single Layer/8.5 GB Dual Layer.
- Newer Technology – faster innovation.
- More expensive.
- Faster writing (normally).
- Designed to be Compatible with DVD Players.
- Single Write/Rewrite Formats available.
DVD-
- 4.7 GB Single Layer/8.5 GB Dual Layer.
- Older Technology – slower innovation.
- Cheaper.
- Slower Writing speeds.
- Most compatible DVD Format.
- Single Write/Rewrite Formats available.
----------------------------
Both Technologies are based upon CD-RW Technology, and both are actually very similar. There is little risk of a “Betamax/VHS situation” again because both standards seem to be here for good.
In case you don’t know about the Betamax/VHS situation, we just mean when Video Recorders were first launched, there was Sony Betamax, and VHS, people that invested in Betamax were unable to use their Recorders, because the tapes were unavailable.
There are other formats of DVD, and DVD-RAM is traditionally only for Data. It is the most Versatile Disc to use for Data Storage. You can Erase Bits of Data without having to Erase everything.
DVD-RAM is organised more like a Computers Hard Drive, and if you ever get to look at the bottom of one, you will notice many rectangles.
Because DVD-RAM is used like a Hard Drive, it is possible to read and write at the same time to the same Disc. Because this is possible it means, that many DVD Recorders for your TV use this Standard to playback while still recording.
There are a few different DVD Standards, however you should not be put off, you should buy the DVD’s that suit your Recorder. If you have one of the older Recorders, then it could well only support DVD-R Formats, but make sure you look into this, and buy the correct Media to suit.
DVD+/-RW drives are common place now, they allow people the benefit to use either Media, and no longer do you have to shop around for a specific Media, instead you can buy whichever is cheapest.
Only the newest DVD Players will be compatible with writable DVD’s, in fact some may have to be unlocked in order to play DVD+/-R.
The naming of DVD Standards is quite confusing, CD-RW used the – as a Hyphen, but DVD-R is different. This leads to a lot of confusion, We have even had people in PC shops trying to tell to check, if you should buy CD+RW instead of – , and when people took some Discs Back, because they were Faulty. This is wrong, there is no +/- CD, only DVD has the two separate Standards.
The only time when you will be restricted by the choice of which standard is, when you are buying DVD’s for your DVD TV Recorder, because these will often only support one standard.
