P2P Networks are quite popular, do you remember Napster ? That was a P2P Download Client. Literally P2P stands for "Peer To Peer", you install some Software on your Computer and you get access to literally thousands of Files.

"Peer To Peer" literally means that you are Downloading a File from another persons Computer, when you install a P2P Application, you can allow other people to have access to Download any of the Files on your Computer if you so wish.

Every time you make a search for a File it will search all of the people’s Computers that are currently Online, and allow you to Download from one or a number of them at the same time.

There are hundreds of different Companies that offer unlimited Movie, or Song Downloads. These Companies will all rely upon the P2P Networks, of course some of these may be Legitimate, like the Re-released Napster client, and others may be Illegal.

The Software acts as a Gateway, and allows you access to any other users Computer, as soon as you find somebody has the File, that you want you can start Downloading it. It’s a good idea to prevent other people Downloading from your Computer, unless you’ve got something that you really want to share.

Many people often ask if P2P Networks, and whether File Sharing in general is Legal. Of course it depends what you are doing with it. The actual Technology is Legal, it is fine to use P2P Networks, but of course if you Download certain things it can probably be Illegal.

You can Download a File that the other Person Owns the Rights to, or is allowed to Share.

There are several File Types that come under this Category:

• A piece of Software that they created themselves.
• Some Music that was created by them.
• A Movie that was created by themselves.
• Freeware – as long as you don’t alter it.
• A document that you own the Rights to.

But there are things that are Illegal to use the P2P Networks for, examples include:

• Downloading Feature Films like ‘The Matrix’.
• Downloading full Software (Warez).
• Downloading Music that you don’t have the rights to.

There are a number of reasons why someone would allow you to Download their work for Free, perhaps they are new and want to get their name well known. Or perhaps they offer a Demo Program to build interest in the full Program.

There are also thousands of Freeware Products available for Download on the Internet for hundreds of different reasons.

Be careful when using P2P Networks, a lot of the Software is infected with Viruses or some form of Spyware. You could consider paying for access to a portal to improve Security and also get better access to Files.

If you start trying to use P2P Networks to Download full version Software or Movies then you’re asking for trouble.

Doing this will probably end up getting you caught. There are people that monitor the P2P Networks to try to spot any illegal activity in the hope that they will fine any Offenders.

Therefore if you plan to join any P2P Networks or Downloading P2P Files, it is important that you have Software, that can protect your Computers Safety.
