In case you don’t know what Linux is, it’s an Open Source Operating System. Yes it’s a potential replacement for Windows! Most of the Linux releases (called builds) are available completely Free of Charge.
You just Download one of the distributions that you like the look of, install it on your Computer and away you go.
The beauty of an Operating System like this is, that a lot of the Software to run on it is completely Free! You can get powerful Image Editing Software, Office suites, and even Media Players.
So let’s take some time to look at the different Music Players available to run on the Linux Operating System.
- XMMS Music player.
- Amarok.
- Real Player 10.
XMMS
XMMS Music Player is one of our personal Favourites, because it reminds a lot of Winamp. Both the look and feel of the Software are very similar to Winamp, this makes using it a Breeze.
Amarok
We have never tried using Amarok, but we have heard some Users are very fond of it. This software creates a Database of all your Music, we assume just like the Windows Media Music Library.
Real Player 10
Even Real Player 10 is available on Linux! This shows just how seriously big companies are taking Linux.
------------------------------
Most distributions of Linux do not support playback of Video Files without installing extra Tools. This is very different to Windows, where the Windows Media Player is included as soon as you install the Operating System.
There are a variety of different Video Players available for your Linux system. The best place to start is just searching on the Internet.
If you really don’t like using any of the Linux applications, then it is possible to run your Windows applications using Wine (which stands for: Wine is not an emulator!), although how successful this will be depends completely upon what you are trying to run. Wine has been released for a very long time, but it still remains in Beta testing.
The most difficult thing in Linux is installing new Software, you cannot just run an install programs, you must use the “Add/Remove programs” because many applications depend upon other applications to run.
Don’t think that just a few people are using Linux, big Companies are also using it! Disney used it and they love it, because it saves them a fortune on Windows licences every year.
Why don’t you give Linux a go ? You don’t have to get rid of Windows yet - you can install both and choose which one to boot when your Computer starts up.
There is a Linux Distribution to suit everybody’s needs! Plus, unlike Windows most Distributions of Linux, shop with a Free fully functional Office suite.
