There is some debate over whether Copying Playstation Games is Legal or not, of course it completely depends upon the reason you are Copying the Games.
Playstation Games are expensive, if you want to copy them as a Backup then surely its ok ?
Well it’s still a grey area, as long as you only use them for your own purposes then there are unlikely to be any problems.
Some people have even tried claiming that Sony should not be allowed to add Copy Protection to its Games as we should be allowed to make Backups.
Copying Playstation Games is relatively easy, but getting them to play on your console will be very difficult. You will need to modify your console in some way, but we’ll worry about that later.
Playstation one or PS-One Games are all stored on CD’s, so to Copy them you need the following equipment:
- CD Writer.
- CDRWin (Freeware software) Download this from www.goldenhawk.com.
- Blank CD-R.
So how do you go about Copying a PSX game ?
- Download and install the CDRWin Software from www.goldenhawk.com
- Open CDRWin.
- Select Extract Disc/Tracks/Sectors (It’s the button with a CD pointing to a hard drive.
- Put your Playstation One Game into your CD drive.
- Point the Software to the drive that you put the Game into.
- In the “Reading options” tab select RAW and deselect the others in this row.
- Set “Error Recovery” to ignore, leave all the other settings as default.
- Click start and the Playstation Game will be copied to your Hard Drive.
- Apply any patches to the Playstation Game stored on your Hard Drive if you need to now (If you want to change it to PAL for example).
- Click “Record disc” (The button with a CD with a flash of light by it).
- Load cue sheet, and locate the Playstation Game you just stored on your Hard Drive.
- Click “Start recording” to get your Copied Playstation CD.
Your Playstation CD will be fully working, you can test it by playing it with one of the emulators for your PC however you will only be able to play it on a modified Playstation.
The easiest way is to take your Playstation to somebody who is capable of fitting a mod-chip this allows the Playstation to read Copied Games.
Another alternative is using a Boot Disc such as PSXchange, this is a wonderful solution you just pop the Boot Disc in, place your copied Game into your console and play to your hearts content!
Ok so we’ve got Copying Playstation One Games licked, but how about Cpying Playstation 2 Games ?
Well PS2 Games are either stored on DVD or CD, so you may need a DVD writer to Copy some of them.
- Download and install DVD Decrypter Software.
- Insert the PS2 Game that you want to copy and start DVD Decrypter.
- Select Mode, ISO then Read.
- Store the ISO in a folder on your Computer, but make sure you remember where it is.
- Click Copy/Decrypt
.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Remove the original and insert a blank DVD.
- Now select Mode, ISO, then Write.
- Select the ISO that you just created.
- Click Burn.
You will however need some way to play the Backups, preferably a Mod-chip. There are alternatives if you don’t want to open your console up.
There is a flip-Top lid that although it does mean opening your console for, it’s very simple to do! Or you can use a slide key. Both of these will need some form of Boot Disc.
